Worked Examples

Rate tables give you a range. These are three concrete briefs, the number we would quote for each, and the reasoning behind it.

Monthly Blog Retainer

Four articles a month at 1,200 to 1,500 words for a B2B software company, with keyword briefs supplied, one revision round each, and CMS drafts uploaded.

$3,000/month

Supplied keyword briefs remove the strategy work and keep the per-article rate at $750, which is a fair mid-level figure for researched B2B content. CMS entry is included here because it is quick at this volume, but say so — it is a courtesy, not an obligation, and worth naming.

Pillar Page with Supporting Cluster

A 4,000-word pillar article plus five supporting pieces, internal linking plan, original research summarised from three industry reports, and two revision rounds.

$9,500

The pillar is not just longer, it is architecturally different — it has to hold the cluster together and the linking plan is a deliverable in itself. Synthesising three reports into original framing is the part clients cannot get elsewhere and the part that justifies the premium over per-word rates.

Product Documentation Set

Twelve help-centre articles for a technical product, written from a staging environment and two engineer interviews, with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

$6,000

Documentation prices above marketing content per word because accuracy is not optional and every step must be verified in the product. Engineer interviews are scheduling and synthesis work. Screenshots are a real deliverable that needs updating whenever the interface changes — flag that as future work.

Factors That Affect Pricing

These factors most influence what a content writer should charge.

Niche Expertise

Writing about SaaS product features, medical devices, or fintech requires deep domain knowledge. Niche experts can charge 2-3x general-topic rates because the research burden and the risk of error are higher.

SEO Research

Content that requires keyword research, competitor analysis, and optimised heading structure takes significantly longer than a briefed first-draft article. Price SEO-optimised content separately from editorial content.

Research & Interviews

Data-driven articles with original research, expert interviews, or primary source citation require 2-3x the production time of opinion pieces. Quote these separately with a clear scope.

Revisions

Specify how many revision rounds are included (typically one). Content revisions that change the brief mid-draft — not just edits — should be re-scoped and re-quoted.

Turnaround Time

Standard delivery is 3-5 business days for blog posts and 1-2 weeks for long-form articles. Rush delivery carries a 25-50% premium. Define rush in your contract.

Usage Rights

Ghostwriting (client publishes under their name) is typically priced 20-30% higher than bylined content. Exclusive perpetual rights are more valuable than licensed use — price accordingly.

What to Put in the Quote

Most scope disputes start with a line the quote never mentioned. Name what the price covers, and name what costs extra, before the work starts.

Include in the base price

  • The number of pieces and a target length range for each
  • The research depth: sources consulted, interviews conducted, product access needed
  • One structural revision round and one line-edit round
  • On-page basics: headings, meta title, meta description and internal links
  • Voice alignment against a supplied style guide or sample pieces
  • Delivery format, whether a document or a draft in the client CMS
  • The turnaround per piece in working days

Charge separately for

  • Keyword research, topic clustering and editorial calendar planning
  • Original research, surveys or data analysis
  • Subject matter expert interviews you must source and schedule
  • Image sourcing, screenshots, diagrams and custom graphics
  • Publishing, formatting and CMS configuration beyond a plain draft
  • Revision rounds beyond the number named in the quote
  • Content refreshes and updates to previously delivered pieces
  • Rewrites caused by a change of brief, audience or product direction

Pricing Mistakes to Avoid

The four errors that cost freelancers the most money on this kind of work.

1

Pricing Per Word on Technical Topics

A per-word rate assumes writing time dominates. On technical content, research and verification often take longer than drafting. Writers who hold a flat per-word rate across topics lose money on exactly the work that is hardest to replace. Price per piece, weighted by research depth.

2

Not Charging for Content Refreshes

Clients return months later asking for updates to old pieces, framed as small fixes. Refreshing a piece means re-researching what changed, which can approach the cost of writing it new. Set a refresh rate in the original agreement so the answer is ready.

3

Accepting Briefs Without a Target Reader

A brief with a keyword and no audience produces content that satisfies nobody and gets rewritten. Ask who the reader is, what they already know, and what action should follow. If the client cannot answer, that discovery is billable work, not free clarification.

4

Bundling Publishing into Writing

CMS entry, formatting, image placement and internal linking are a separate task with its own error surface. At low volume it is a reasonable courtesy. At retainer volume it is hours a month. Name it in the quote either way, so it stays visible.

The Content Writing Market in 2026

AI has taken the floor out of generic content writing entirely. Listicles, definitional posts and thin how-to articles no longer support freelance rates, and search engines increasingly do not rank them. That segment of the market has effectively closed to human writers competing on price.

What has grown in value is content that requires access: interviews with real practitioners, original data, hands-on product testing and genuine domain expertise. As AI summaries answer the easy questions directly, the pages that still earn traffic are the ones with something a model could not have produced. Writers who can prove that access are quoting materially higher in 2026 than writers who cannot.
