How complex is the project?

Worked Examples

Rate tables give you a range. These are three concrete briefs, the number we would quote for each, and the reasoning behind it.

Technical Audit for a Mid-Size Site

A 500-page ecommerce site. Crawl analysis, indexation review, Core Web Vitals assessment, structured data check, and a prioritised findings document with implementation notes.

$4,500

The crawl is a day. The interpretation is a week. An audit that lists 200 issues without ranking them is worthless — the prioritisation is what the client is buying. Implementation notes written for developers rather than marketers are what make the document get acted on.

Monthly Retainer for a SaaS Company

Ongoing SEO: keyword strategy, monthly content briefs, on-page optimisation, technical monitoring, link acquisition oversight, and a monthly reporting call.

$5,000/month

Retainers price on the response commitment as much as the deliverables. Monthly monitoring means noticing a traffic drop within days, not weeks. Content briefs are the highest-leverage output. Set a minimum term of six months — SEO results below that horizon are not attributable and the engagement will be judged unfairly.

Migration Support

A domain and platform migration for a site with 3,000 URLs: redirect mapping, pre-launch checks, launch-day monitoring, and four weeks of post-launch recovery tracking.

$12,000

Migrations are the highest-stakes SEO work there is, because the downside is losing years of accumulated ranking in a weekend. Redirect mapping at 3,000 URLs is meticulous manual work. Price the risk you are absorbing, and be explicit that launch-day availability is part of what is being bought.

Factors That Affect Pricing

These factors determine what an SEO consultant should charge.

Site Size & Complexity

Auditing a 10-page brochure site is very different from a 10,000-page e-commerce catalogue with international hreflang, JavaScript rendering issues, and faceted navigation. Scope the site's technical complexity before quoting.

Niche Competitiveness

Ranking a local plumber for neighbourhood searches is far less work than ranking a SaaS company for "CRM software" against Salesforce. Price your effort relative to the keyword difficulty and the client's competitive landscape.

Deliverable Scope

An audit report, a keyword map, an optimised page, and a monthly reporting dashboard are four different deliverables. Define exactly what each engagement includes and price each component separately if needed.

Ongoing vs. Project

Retainers are priced lower per hour than one-off projects because they provide income predictability. However, ensure your retainer scope is well-defined — "unlimited SEO" is not a retainer, it's a liability.

Reporting & Communication

Monthly reporting, rank tracking, and client calls take real time. If you're providing a dashboard, weekly updates, and monthly strategy calls, factor those hours into your retainer rate.

Tools & Subscriptions

Ahrefs, Semrush, Screaming Frog, and similar tools cost $100-500/month. Either pass tool costs through to the client or factor them into your rate. Specify which tools are used and who pays for them.

What to Put in the Quote

Most scope disputes start with a line the quote never mentioned. Name what the price covers, and name what costs extra, before the work starts.

Include in the base price

  • The scope boundary: which domains, subdomains and site sections are covered
  • The deliverables, named individually with their formats
  • Access requirements: analytics, search console, CMS and server logs
  • A prioritised findings document rather than an unranked issue list
  • The reporting cadence and the metrics you will report against
  • Your response time for urgent issues, stated in working hours
  • A minimum engagement term where results need time to appear

Charge separately for

  • Implementation of the recommendations, as opposed to producing them
  • Content writing, briefs and editorial production
  • Link acquisition, digital PR and outreach campaigns
  • Site migrations, replatforming and redirect mapping
  • International or multilingual SEO and hreflang configuration
  • Tooling subscriptions passed through at cost
  • Additional properties, subdomains or sites added mid-engagement
  • Emergency response outside the agreed working hours

Pricing Mistakes to Avoid

The four errors that cost freelancers the most money on this kind of work.

1

Promising Rankings

You do not control the algorithm, the competition or the client development queue. Guaranteeing a position is a promise you cannot keep and it sets the engagement up to fail. Commit to process, deliverables and leading indicators. Clients who insist on a ranking guarantee will be unhappy regardless.

2

Advising Without Implementation Authority

An audit delivered to a client whose developers have a six-month backlog will not move anything, and you will be blamed for the flat graph. Ask about implementation capacity before quoting. If it does not exist, either price implementation in or say plainly that results depend on it.

3

Taking Short-Term Retainers

SEO changes take weeks to be crawled and months to be reflected in rankings. A three-month retainer ends before your work is measurable, and it will be judged on noise. Set a six-month minimum and explain why. It protects the client as much as it protects you.

4

Charging by the Hour

Hourly SEO billing punishes experience. A consultant who spots a canonical problem in ten minutes bills less than one who spends a day looking. Price on the engagement and the value of the outcome, and use hours only as an internal check on whether the number works.

The SEO Consulting Market in 2026

AI-generated search summaries have changed what an SEO engagement is for. A meaningful share of informational queries are now answered without a click, which has reduced traffic to definitional and how-to content across almost every sector. Clients feel this as a decline they cannot explain, and explaining it is now part of the job.

The work has shifted toward queries that still convert: commercial intent, comparison, and anything requiring a real product or a real transaction. Technical foundations, structured data and being cited as a source in AI answers have all become more valuable, not less. Consultants who can reframe an engagement around qualified traffic rather than raw sessions are holding rates well in 2026.
