Technical drawings make this predictable — modelling from a rough sketch would cost meaningfully more because you would be making design decisions. Texturing is roughly a third of the time. Five renders means five lighting and composition setups, not five exports from one camera.

Game-Ready Character Asset

One stylised character: high-poly sculpt, retopologised to a 15,000-triangle budget, UV unwrapped, PBR textured, rigged for humanoid animation, delivered as an FBX for Unreal.

The sculpt is the visible half. Retopology to a strict polygon budget, clean UVs and a working rig are the half that determines whether the asset is usable. Engine-specific delivery means import testing in Unreal, which is QA time worth quoting rather than absorbing.

Architectural Visualisation Set

Six exterior and interior renders of a residential development from supplied CAD plans: modelling, materials, landscaping, lighting for two times of day, and post-production.

Factors That Affect Pricing

These factors most influence 3D modeling pricing.

Model Complexity

A low-poly game asset takes a fraction of the time of a high-fidelity product model with subdivision surfaces, PBR textures, and multiple material layers. Define polygon budget and texture resolution upfront.

Rigging & Animation

A static model is scoped differently from a rigged character ready for animation. Rigging adds significant time, and animation adds even more. Price modeling, rigging, and animation as separate line items.

Texturing & Materials

Basic flat textures, procedural materials, and hand-painted textures represent increasing levels of effort. Photorealistic PBR materials with normal maps, roughness maps, and ambient occlusion take 2-3x longer than simple colour materials.

Rendering

Delivering raw 3D files is different from delivering final renders with lighting, environment, and post-processing. Specify whether rendering is included and how many final images or animation frames are in scope.

File Format & Engine

Delivering OBJ or FBX is standard. Optimising for a specific game engine (Unity, Unreal), AR platform, or web renderer (Three.js, Babylon.js) requires additional export testing and often mesh optimisation.

Reference Materials

Modeling from a detailed technical drawing is faster than modeling from a rough sketch or verbal description. Charge more when you're responsible for interpreting ambiguous references or making design decisions.

What to Put in the Quote

Most scope disputes start with a line the quote never mentioned. Name what the price covers, and name what costs extra, before the work starts.

Include in the base price

  • The number of models and the level of detail or polygon budget for each
  • The reference material you are working from and its quality
  • Texturing scope: resolution, map types and whether materials are PBR
  • Whether rigging and animation are in scope, stated explicitly
  • The number of final renders, with camera angles and lighting setups named
  • Delivery formats, including the native project file and portable exports
  • A named number of revision rounds, tied to the blockout and final stages

Charge separately for

  • Rigging, skinning and animation as separate line items
  • Retopology and optimisation to a specific engine budget
  • Engine-specific export and import testing for Unity, Unreal or the web
  • Additional renders, camera angles or lighting conditions
  • Post-production, compositing and retouching of final images
  • Modelling from ambiguous references where you make design decisions
  • Native source files and full material libraries handed over

Pricing Mistakes to Avoid

The four errors that cost freelancers the most money on this kind of work.

Quoting Without Seeing the Reference

Modelling from a dimensioned technical drawing and modelling from a phone photo are different jobs at different prices, because the second makes you the designer. Ask for the reference material before quoting. If it is ambiguous, price the interpretation work as its own line.

Bundling Rigging into Modelling

A static model and a rigged, animation-ready model are separate deliverables with separate skills. Rigging can equal or exceed modelling time on a character, and bad topology makes it worse. Quote modelling, retopology, texturing, rigging and animation as distinct lines every time.

Ignoring the Target Engine

An asset that looks correct in your viewport can fail on import: wrong scale, wrong axis, broken materials, exceeded polygon budget. Ask which engine or platform the asset ships to before quoting, and price the import-and-verify pass. It is never zero.

Revising After Blockout Approval

Changing proportions at the blockout stage costs an hour. The same change after sculpting, retopology, UVs and texturing can mean redoing all four. Get written blockout approval, state that it locks proportions and silhouette, and price later structural changes at a rework rate.

The 3D Modeling Market in 2026

Demand for 3D assets keeps broadening as ecommerce, configurators, AR previews and real-time visualisation move from novelty to expectation. Retailers that once commissioned photography are commissioning models instead, because a single asset can produce unlimited angles, colourways and contexts without another shoot.

Generative 3D tools have begun producing usable rough geometry, which is compressing the price of simple, low-detail assets. They have not solved clean topology, strict polygon budgets, correct UVs or rigs that deform properly — the exact things that make an asset usable in a production pipeline. Artists who work to engine constraints are pricing above the market in 2026; artists selling static hero models alone are feeling the squeeze.
