Motion Design Pricing Calculator

Motion design pricing depends heavily on the complexity of animation, the number of assets, and usage rights. A simple animated logo might be $400, while a 60-second explainer video with custom character animation can exceed $20,000. Use our free calculator to get a data-backed price for your next motion design project — no signup required.

Calculate Your Rate

Answer a few questions about your project to get a personalized price range.

Step 1 of 6

How complex is the project?

Typical Price Ranges

Typical motion design rates in 2026, broken down by project type and animator experience level.

Project TypeJuniorMid-LevelSeniorExpert
Animated Logo / Intro$150 – $400$400 – $900$900 – $2,000$2,000 – $5,000
Social Media Animation$200 – $600$600 – $1,500$1,500 – $3,500$3,500 – $8,000
Explainer Video (60s)$500 – $1,500$1,500 – $4,000$4,000 – $9,000$9,000 – $20,000
UI / App Animation$300 – $800$800 – $2,000$2,000 – $5,000$5,000 – $12,000

Worked Examples

Rate tables give you a range. These are three concrete briefs, the number we would quote for each, and the reasoning behind it.

Animated Logo Sting

A five-second logo animation from supplied vector artwork, one concept direction, two revision rounds, delivered in ProRes and MP4 with an alpha channel version.

$1,200

Five seconds sounds trivial and is not. Supplied vectors usually need rebuilding for animation, and the timing is where the work lives — an easing pass can take as long as the build. Three delivery formats is three exports plus checks. This is a floor, not a bargain.

Sixty-Second Explainer Video

A scripted explainer with storyboard, custom character illustration, six scenes, sound design, licensed music, and delivery for web and social. Three revision rounds.

$14,000

Script and storyboard are 20% before a single frame animates. Custom characters mean illustration and rigging, which is the difference between this and a $4,000 template-driven explainer. Six scenes is the unit that matters — quote per scene and the number becomes easy to defend.

UI Motion Specification for an App

Motion design for twelve interface transitions: timing curves, durations, a documented motion language, and Lottie exports tested on iOS and Android.

$9,500

Lottie is the expensive word here. Exporting through Bodymovin and verifying behaviour across two platforms is QA work that routinely adds 20% to a project. The documented motion language is the highest-value deliverable — it is what lets the engineering team apply motion without you.

Factors That Affect Pricing

These factors most influence motion design pricing.

Animation Complexity

Simple logo reveals and text animations are priced differently from character animation or complex 3D motion. Specify the style reference upfront so you're not scoping a $500 job and delivering a $5,000 result.

Asset Creation vs. Template

Fully custom-designed assets take significantly longer than adapting a motion template. If you're designing every element from scratch, your rate should reflect the combined design and animation work.

Duration & Scene Count

A 30-second animation with 5 scenes is a very different scope from a 2-minute video with 30 scene transitions. Price by scene count and total duration, not just finished runtime.

Sound Design & Music

Adding sound effects, voiceover sync, and music licensing is a separate skill and cost. Specify whether audio is included in your rate or quoted separately.

Revision Rounds

Motion revisions are expensive — changing timing or layout mid-production can cascade across the entire project. Limit revision rounds to two and charge an hourly rate for additional rounds. Get sign-off on storyboards before animating.

Delivery Formats

Delivering a single MP4 is simple. Delivering transparent-background WebM, GIF, Lottie JSON, and multiple aspect ratios multiplies your export time. Specify which formats are included.

What to Put in the Quote

Most scope disputes start with a line the quote never mentioned. Name what the price covers, and name what costs extra, before the work starts.

Include in the base price

  • The finished duration and the number of distinct scenes
  • Whether artwork is supplied, adapted or created from scratch
  • Storyboard and animatic stages, with approval points named
  • A named number of revision rounds, tied to the storyboard and animation stages
  • Sound design and music, or a clear statement that they are excluded
  • Delivery formats, codecs, resolutions and frame rates
  • The aspect ratios included, listed individually

Charge separately for

  • Custom illustration, character design and rigging
  • Script writing, voiceover casting and recording
  • Additional aspect ratios and platform cutdowns
  • Lottie or GIF export, including cross-platform testing
  • Sound design and music licensing if excluded from the base scope
  • Changes requested after storyboard approval
  • Source project files handed to the client
  • Rush turnaround inside your normal booking window

Pricing Mistakes to Avoid

The four errors that cost freelancers the most money on this kind of work.

1

Charging Per Second

Per-second pricing ignores everything that happens before animation: asset preparation, storyboarding and rigging. A five-second sting with a complex build can cost more than fifteen seconds of simple transitions. Quote per scene and per complexity level, and check the total against your hourly rate internally.

2

Animating Before Storyboard Sign-Off

Starting animation to save time is the most expensive shortcut in motion design. A composition change at storyboard stage takes an hour. The same change after rigging and animation can mean rebuilding scenes. Get written approval on the storyboard, and say that it locks composition.

3

Assuming Supplied Artwork Is Ready

Vector files built for print are rarely built for animation. Layers are merged, paths are flattened and nothing is grouped for movement. Rebuilding artwork can take a full day before animation starts. Ask to see the files before quoting, or price a preparation allowance.

4

Bundling Sound Design In

Sound design and music are a separate discipline with separate licensing costs, and clients frequently expect them silently. State in the quote whether audio is included. If it is not, say so in one line — it prevents a delivery-day argument that always costs more than the fee.

The Motion Design Market in 2026

Motion has moved from a finishing touch to a baseline expectation. Product interfaces, brand identities and social content are all now specified with motion from the start, which means motion designers are being brought into projects earlier and with broader remits than a few years ago.

Generative video tools have made rough animatics and simple transitions cheap, and that has compressed the price of generic motion. It has not touched brand-specific motion languages, character work, or interface motion that must ship to a real codebase and behave correctly. Motion designers who can deliver a documented, implementable system are commanding higher rates in 2026 than those delivering finished videos alone.
