App Design Pricing Calculator

Mobile app design pricing ranges from $1,500 for a simple MVP to $50,000+ for a comprehensive multi-platform design system. The scope depends on the number of screens, the complexity of interactions, and whether you're designing from scratch or working within existing patterns. Use our free calculator to get a data-backed price for your next app design project — no signup required.

Worked Examples

Rate tables give you a range. These are three concrete briefs, the number we would quote for each, and the reasoning behind it.

MVP Mobile App Design

Twenty screens for an iOS and Android app: onboarding, one core workflow, profile and settings. Platform-native patterns, no research, founder decisions, five weeks.

$16,000

Two platforms is not two designs, but it is not one either — navigation patterns, system components and gesture conventions differ enough to need deliberate decisions on every screen. The core workflow holds most of the design effort. No research is what makes five weeks possible.

App Redesign with Design System

Redesign an existing app of 45 screens, plus a component library with tokens, documented states, dark mode, and accessibility conformance to WCAG 2.2 AA.

$38,000

Dark mode roughly doubles the surface being designed and is not a colour inversion — contrast, elevation and imagery all need rethinking. Accessibility conformance is an auditable standard requiring real verification work. The component library is the deliverable with the longest life and should be priced as infrastructure.

Feature Design for an Existing Product

One new feature in a live app: eight screens, existing design system to work within, two rounds of usability testing with five participants each, and engineering handover.

$11,000

Working inside an existing system saves visual design time and costs comprehension time — you must learn the rules before you can extend them. The two testing rounds drive the figure: recruitment, sessions, synthesis and a revision pass after each. Handover to an established team is quick.

Factors That Affect Pricing

These factors most influence mobile app design pricing.

Screen Count & Complexity

Each unique screen requires design, a dark mode variant, responsive states (empty, loading, error), and handoff specs. A 20-screen app with 4 states per screen is 80+ design artefacts. Scope screen count precisely before quoting.

UX Research & Discovery

Jumping straight to UI without a discovery phase leads to expensive redesigns. If your rate includes user research, journey mapping, and information architecture — price that as a separate phase with its own deliverables.

Prototype Fidelity

Static mockups, clickable Figma prototypes, and developer-ready design tokens with auto-layout represent increasing levels of fidelity and effort. Specify which prototype fidelity is included in your quote.

Platform Coverage

Designing for iOS only is simpler than designing for iOS + Android + tablet, where platform conventions differ. Multi-platform scope should be priced accordingly.

Design System Depth

A basic component library (buttons, inputs, typography) takes far less time than a full Figma design system with tokens, documentation, usage guidelines, and interactive examples. Scope design system depth explicitly.

Developer Handoff

Design is not done when Figma is done. Handoff includes annotating interactions, writing component specs, exporting assets, and answering developer questions during implementation. Factor 10-20% of project time for handoff.

What to Put in the Quote

Most scope disputes start with a line the quote never mentioned. Name what the price covers, and name what costs extra, before the work starts.

Include in the base price

  • The screen count expressed as flows, and the platforms covered
  • Interaction states for every component, including empty, error and loading
  • Platform-specific patterns for each operating system in scope
  • Adaptive layouts across the device sizes you commit to supporting
  • A component library with tokens, spacing rules and documented usage
  • Developer handover with specs and exported assets at required densities
  • A named number of revision rounds at the flow level

Charge separately for

  • User research, usability testing, recruitment and participant incentives
  • Dark mode or any additional theme
  • Accessibility audit and conformance to a named standard
  • Motion design, transition specification and animated prototypes
  • App store assets: icons, screenshots and preview videos
  • Additional platforms, such as tablet, watch or desktop variants
  • Design support during the engineering build sprint
  • Flows or features added after the scope is agreed

Pricing Mistakes to Avoid

The four errors that cost freelancers the most money on this kind of work.

1

Quoting Two Platforms as One

iOS and Android differ in navigation, system components, gestures and typography. Designing one and exporting it as both produces an app that feels wrong on at least one platform. Decide with the client whether you are designing one adaptive system or two, and price the answer.

2

Treating Dark Mode as an Export

Dark mode is not an inverted palette. Contrast ratios, elevation cues, imagery and brand colours all need reworking, and every screen must be checked. It roughly doubles the design surface. Quote it as a separate deliverable or state clearly that it is out of scope.

3

Omitting App Store Assets

Icons at every required size, localised screenshots and preview videos are a real production task that clients assume is included. It is not design work in the same sense and it lands at the worst possible moment. Name it in the quote, in or out, before launch week.

4

Designing Without Device Constraints

Small screens, notches, safe areas, dynamic type and one-handed reach are constraints, not details. Designs that ignore them get rebuilt by engineers who do not. Ask for the minimum supported device and text size before designing, and check your layouts against them.

The App Design Market in 2026

App design has professionalised around systems and accessibility. Platform vendors have raised their own bars, regulators in several markets now require accessibility conformance for consumer applications, and clients increasingly arrive with those requirements already written into the brief rather than discovered late.

That has been good for rates at the experienced end. AI tools produce plausible app screens quickly, which has devalued visual execution, while simultaneously raising the value of designers who can reason about platform conventions, edge cases and conformance. In 2026 the defensible skill is knowing what an interface must handle, not how quickly a mockup can be produced.
