Factors That Affect Pricing

Several factors determine what a photographer should charge for a project.

Shoot Type & Duration

A 1-hour portrait session requires far less time and equipment than a full-day commercial shoot. Price per shoot type, not just per hour — setup, travel, and gear costs vary significantly.

Usage Rights & Licensing

Personal use is priced lower than commercial use. If a client is using your images in advertising, packaging, or national campaigns, charge a licensing fee on top of your shooting rate. Always specify usage scope in your contract.

Post-Processing & Retouching

Editing time often rivals or exceeds shooting time. Clarify how many edited images are included, what level of retouching is standard, and your rate for additional images or advanced retouching.

Equipment & Overhead

Professional camera bodies, lenses, lighting, and storage cost thousands of dollars. Your rate should factor in gear depreciation, insurance, and software subscriptions — these are real business costs.

Turnaround Time

Standard delivery (5-10 business days) is included in your base rate. Rush delivery (24-48 hours) should carry a 25-50% premium to compensate for overtime editing and reprioritising your schedule.

Location & Travel

On-location shoots outside your city require travel time, transport, and potentially accommodation. Charge travel costs at cost plus a day rate for travel time.
